Beat Poets

03Feb09

Things are coming together nicely here in Dallas.  I’ve met several people here in Dallas that are all interested in performing on a trial run of the DFW Round.  But we still need to connect with some beat poets that would like to perform!  If you’re in Dallas and you got some mad skills, or will be traveling through Dallas at some point please hit us up with your contact information and we’ll try to work something out!

If you are a slam poet, musician, photographer, or painter, please contact Paul at dfwround@gmail.com.  I’d love to meet with you and treat you to a coffee!  I am starting to create a list of artist that want to be a part of something that is unlike anything you’ve ever participated with in your lifetime!

If you live in Dallas, and have ever wondered the following:

Why isn’t there better music venues located here in Dallas?

Why is the artistic community so fragmented?

Where are the painters, the poets, the writers?

How can this town be so big, and yet not be a cultural hub?

Then you’ve come to the right blog.  My name is Paul Barger.  I’m a local here in Dallas that is wondering the same things.  I moved here to Dallas in May of 2008 after spending a two year stint in Portland, OR.  I originally grew up in Texas and completed my undergrad here, before leaving Texas for a short affair with Oregon.  But now I’m back!  I wouldn’t consider myself an artist.  I like to think of myself as a cultural catalyst, and advocate for the arts.

During my time in Portland, I was introduced to a gathering of local artist by my good friend Jan.  It was call “The Portland Round”.  Inspired by a group in Seattle, Washington that started “an intimate evening of collaborative music, slam poetry, and live painting” called “The Round – Seattle”, Her and another gal decided to bring it to Portland.  And it was the most fantastic art experience that I’ve ever had!

Upon returning to Dallas, with high hopes that I would find a similar gather, I was quickly disappointed to see the fragmentation that is going on here in Dallas.  I was sad to see that Deep Ellum had fallen off the map, and deeply disturbed by the area Dallas labeled, “The Arts District”.  So I quickly turned to the live music scene only to be let down again.

But I know there are some really gifted artist out there!  I’ve met several of you already, and heard your own similar frustrations.  Well we’ve all got to start somewhere.  So here’s what I’m thinking:  It all begins with networking.  If you are an artist yourself, I would encourage you to start following the blog to keep up with our progress.  I would also encourage you to send me an e-mail at dfwround@gmail.com to get on our mailing list.

I would also encourage you to check out what’s going on at The Round website.  Even though we are not currently “official” with the crew from Seattle, you can learn a ton about the idea and the vision for the DFW Round.
